21 Things Reflection
21 Things Reflection
By completing the twenty-one things for teachers, I was able to learn about some valuable resources that I will use in my classroom someday. Each ‘thing’ required me to use a source of technology that I was either familiar with or a source that I had never used before. As I worked through each of the twenty-one things I was amazed with the number of resources I was unfamiliar with. The most important thing I learned while working through the modules was how important it is to understand technology both at a teacher’s level but as well as students.
I believe I will use many of the resources throughout the twenty-things in my classroom. The modules that focused on professional development and school data was both eye opening and neat. Though there were modules that included resources I will most likely not use in my classroom, it was still beneficial to work through them. As I worked through these modules I also learned a lot about myself and how ‘tech savvy’ I am with many resources.
I will be implementing many of the resources I found in the modules, including Google Maps. Google Maps is a great resource to use with students because it allows for a real view of a city or specific location. I will use Google Maps on days when I discuss locations that students are unfamiliar with. Students will also have this application available to them if they are allowed to bring their own device into the classroom. Google Maps is easy to use and gives great insight to not only locations in the United States but around the world.
Another example I will incorporate in my classroom is the idea of using surveys and polls during lessons and at the conclusions of units. Getting feedback from my students about a lesson or activity will help me as a teacher, and more importantly improve my teaching skills. Using surveys and polls is also a fun way to get all students involved, especially if they are completed the survey or quiz on their personal device.
Some weaknesses of these tools that will need to be balanced for optimal student understanding is making sure each student can work with every resource you present to them. Not all students have the resources to complete assignments online at home and do not understand technology as best as they should. Also, not all school districts have the funds and resources to incorporate technology in every classroom. To have students understand technology, it will be crucial for teachers to master technology in the classroom.
I have always believed that technology will continue to play an important part in education. As a future Social Studies and History teacher, bringing resources to the classroom that incorporate technology will benefit student learning. Technology is an important part of kids lives today and it is a great way to engage students in your subject area. Though technology is always changing, it is important to keep learning about technology and the best ways to implement it in my classroom.
